Deck the Halls

Making a paper garland is an inexpensive way to decorate for the holidays

NEEDED SUPPLIES:                                         OPTIONAL SUPPLIES:
• Colored construction paper                            • Glitter  
• Pencil                                                                           • Crayons or markers
• Scissors or X-acto knife                                    • Hole punch
• Twine or thicker yarn
• Tape or mini clothespins

Step 1.

First, make your templates. On a piece of paper, draw or print holiday shapes such as Christmas trees or candy canes. Feel free to customize your shapes for whatever holiday or occasion. Cut out your shapes. 

Step 2.

Next, trace your templates on different colored papers; if the shape is symmetrical, it may be easier to fold your paper in half and draw only one side. After tracing, cut them out. Repeat this until you can make a garland of your desired length. 

Step 3.

To add detail to your shapes, use paper scraps, add glitter, or draw designs onto them. I used a hole punch to make ornaments for my Christmas trees, and a crayon to add stripes to the candy canes. 

Step 4.

Once you’re happy with the garland pieces, cut the twine to your desired length, making sure to allow extra on the ends to hang it up. To attach your pieces to the twine, you can use a pencil to poke two holes into your shapes and thread it through, use clothes pins to clip them to it or tape them to it on their backsides.

I have finally settled the battle of the bands and decided that my top three are Foo Fighters, Florence + the Machine, and BROCKHAMPTON. This is my final year of Wingspan and my last year of being the design editor. I am glad I stuck with the class, even though there were a lot of frustrating times because I have 14 issues of designs and stories to reminisce about after graduation. I have confidence that the underclassmen will continue to improve the magazine, and make it into something that represents them and their school.
