Custodians are an integral part of a school’s ability to function. They play an indispensable role in the daily life of everyone at Nixa High School.
Head custodian Abigail Aguirre has more responsibilities than one may imagine.
“This job is not all about cleaning toilets and sweeping floors,” Aguirre said. “It can be a very demanding job. There are days I wear many hats, such as completing work orders and delivering mail to teachers. We help with event setup and clean-ups. I also do monthly inspections throughout the school so that we are in compliance with the state. There is so much time and dedication that is placed on keeping the school clean and tidy…”
The custodial crew has a significant amount of work, but many find fulfilment in it. Larissa Hawley works from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and lists various responsibilities she and the other custodians share throughout the school.
“We also set up for events and games — during the winter we salt the roads and during the summer we re-wax all the floors,” Hawley said. “We also help with other random things–like when the library got new bookshelves, we helped get the wheels on and get them into the library.”
Hawley greatly enjoys the results of her work.
“It’s a wonderful job to have — we all work really hard to provide a clean and safe environment for the students,” Hawley said. “I love the family feeling I get from other custodians, teachers, administration and even the students. It makes me feel like I’m a part of the community.”
Hawley also notes that much of her and her coworkers’ work can be undersold.
“I think the most under appreciated thing is how hard we work to clean the rest rooms,” Hawley said. “If we didn’t do it they would stink, be sticky and have no toilet paper; There would be food on the walls and floors and almost every toilet would be clogged and overflowing.”
Heidi Palmer works the 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. shift.
“We are here for everyone and we do try and make everything run smoothly,” Palmer said.
Palmer also enjoys aspects of her job.
“I like being a part of the school community — talking to the staff and kids makes the day go by fast and it’s fun,” Palmer said. “It’s nice to be able to contribute and be a part of the time they spend here.”
NHS custodians take great pride in their work, and strive to contribute to the school’s wellbeing.
“Everyone has an important role to make Nixa a great school and the place to be,” Aguirre said. “I feel I just do my part.”
Hawley appreciates her particular role.
“I enjoy the behind the scenes work,” Hawley said. “it allows us to be a part of it without being in the spotlight. I feel like what we do is very important and helpful.”
Aguirre recommends a career in custodial work.
“Nixa rocks, come work for us,” Aguirre said.
