A coffee bar is the perfect thing for our highschool. The Birdhouse is a coffee bar located in the library of Nixa High School. It is only open to the school’s students, so it feels slightly exclusive. The bar is open before school and during lunch every day except for Monday and they give out free coffee to the first five customers every Friday for ‘Free Drink Friday.’
The menu consists of generic coffee options like espressos and lattes, but they also have a few specialty drinks based on some of the staff which makes for a nice laugh. The Birdhouse feels like exactly what it is — a school coffee bar, but it also feels slightly like a little getaway, like an oasis in the middle of the rush of the school day. I am not a big fan of coffee so I was pleasantly surprised when my iced vanilla latte was quite tasty. The student-run coffee bar uses a large espresso machine that sits on a counter to make the coffee. The cups the coffee is served in feel slightly flimsy but not fragile, and the bright blue straws add a pop of color to the presentation of the drink.
The students who run the bar don’t fully mix the coffee in, but I kind of liked that! It looked nice and if you prefer more clumps of sweetness in your coffee it is perfect. I drank the whole iced vanilla latte, which was about the size of a tall from Starbucks, in about 45 minutes -which is extremely fast for me. This should tell you how good the coffee is! The coffee at school is cheaper and faster than Scooters and Starbucks. It only took me about 2 minutes to get my drink and it cost $3.75 compared to Scooters at about $4.50 and Starbucks about $5 for the same drink and size.
The service at The Birdhouse is pretty good, since the students working are around your age they are very friendly and are not scared to start a conversation. It feels like you’re getting coffee from your friends. I would definitely recommend stopping by at lunch or in the morning before school if you want a nice drink!
