Sports, clubs, activities and more, the Nixa High School has a wide variety of things students can get involved with including choir, band and speech and debate which all students are encouraged to join so that one day Nixa might get a chance to get every student involved in a school activity.
Nixa High School Head Principal Dr. David Kelly said he thinks there are a lot of different clubs, sports and activities going on in the school year that students could join.
“We have over 50 clubs that students can participate in, we have about 10 different activities and over 25 different sports students can participate,” Kelly said. “Overall there are close to 100 types of things students can get involved in if they are interested.”
Junior Kason Plute is involved in Cross Country, JROTC, Speech and Debate and DECA.
“I like having purpose, l like competing, l like completing things, I like people counting on me, I like just doing something, I don’t like to just sit around and be lazy,” Plute said.
Plute encourages students to do something with the school like clubs and activities if they aren’t involved.
“It gives them identity, it gives things to wake up for each morning, and reasons to go to school besides just getting an education,” Plute said. “You feel like you are more a part of the team.”
Being involved is beneficial to high school students.
“It builds soft skills in students that they are going to need in the workplace just as much as they will the academic knowledge that we try to teach,” Kelly said.
The average GPA is 3.1, The GPA for students who are involved is 3.3. The average attendance rate was 95.5 percent. For students who are involved, it is 97.5 percent. These differences in statistics are a result of the school activities giving new and optimistic outlooks on high school, resulting in better levels of participation.
“When students get involved they start to realize that they are accountable to more people than just themselves and they realize that there is more to the world than just them,” Kelly said.
Freshman Alyvia Myler, who is involved in volleyball and FCA, enjoys being involved and thinks all students should join an activity.
“It can be very helpful to create new relationships and have fun,” Myler said.
Kelly said going to an activity for school can benefit students when building relationships with their peers.
“It’s going to allow you to meet new people who have common interests or values as you, that will give you a reason to come to school every day,” Kelly said.
Myler’s friends help get her involved and she thinks this could encourage others at NHS to also get more involved.
“My friends and family have really encouraged me to get involved,” Myler said.
Kelly advises the students to try to get involved this year and to just put themselves out there.
“Even though it’s hard just force yourself to go to some sort of club or come to an activity and just watch,” Kelly said.
