The debate around technology often centers on its harms. Technology comes with its challenges. Yet, when used responsibly and in moderation, devices offer countless advantages contributing to a more efficient, connected and informed society (more on devices on pages 13-16). The key is balance. Embracing the positive aspects of technology requires a mindful approach, where we actively manage our screen time and use devices with intention.
With the touch of a button, we can access vast amounts of information, communicate with someone on the other side of the world and complete tasks that may have once taken hours, in just a couple of minutes. This has liberated our time to be used for other things. However, it’s essential to use this newfound time wisely.
One of the most significant benefits of devices has been our ability to connect with others. In the past, our social circles were often limited to those who lived nearby. Today, devices bring the entire world to our fingertips. This exposure to diverse perspectives has broadened our understanding of different cultures, ideologies and ways of life.
In society, devices are vital tools for sharing critical information. For instance, in the realm of medicine, devices allow doctors to make quicker, more accurate diagnoses. Also, in times of crisis, such as a natural disaster or a pandemic, the ability to instantly communicate vital information can be the difference between life and death.
Technology gives us easy access to real-time information about global politics, governance and social movements. Devices can provide a platform for advocacy, allowing people a place to speak out. Technology has even shifted political landscapes and brought attention to issues that might have otherwise been overlooked. In countries where the freedom of speech is restricted, technology offers a way for people to communicate, organize and push for reform. As such, devices have become essential tools in advancing human rights across the world.
We must also recognize the potential downsides of constant device use. The addictive nature of screens can lead to distractions that detract from productivity and well-being. However, these challenges are not impossible to overcome. The solution: moderation. By setting restrictions on screen usage, we can reclaim control over our time. Many devices come with built-in features to track and limit their usage. The tools to manage our screen time are already available, making the change to healthier habits easier.
While devices are often criticized for being distracting, their benefits are undeniable when used intentionally. When devices are used correctly, they are powerful tools that can be used for personal growth, societal advancement and global change. With balance and a mindful approach, we can ensure that devices remain tools that work for us, rather than controlling us.
