As a near addict to crunchy corn and tortilla chips such as Dotios and Takis, trips to the school vending machine for a quick snack are a regular thing. The chip trend is real; visit any local Walmart or gas station and you’ll find rows upon rows of chip brands and flavors. On multiple occasions, I have spent way too long standing in the chip aisle trying to decide what flavor I should get. The more kinds there are, the more difficult the decision becomes. To help you, and myself, save on time, I decided to buy as many flavors (first focusing on Doritos) of chips that I could find at our local Walmart. Then, I invited friends and family to help me taste test the chips. Using their feedback, I made this list of 8 Doritos Flavors: RANKED.
#8 Dinamita Chile Limon
The Dinamita Chile Limon has a good deal of spice, with hints of hot chili powder and lime. Really, they just seem like an attempted knockoff of the popular Takis tortilla chips. The Dinamita chips don’t particularly stand out, and compared to the other Dorito flavors they end up at the back of the list.
#7 Flamin’ Hot Cool Ranch
The Doritos brand decided to turn up the heat on their original flavor Cool Ranch, to create the Flamin’ Hot Cool Ranch. The first bite has a bit more flavor than the original, but initially there isn’t a whole lot of spice. The heat kicks in after you swallow, and it builds up in the back of your throat. It’s a “can’t get it out of my mouth” sort of spice. The cool ranch and hot spice make an interesting combo, and one that is not my favorite.
#6 Flamas
The lime is probably the Flamas most distinguished taste. At first, it doesn’t start off spicy, then it hits you. It’s a mouthful of lime and spice, and there isn’t much else to it.
#5 Sweet & Tangy BBQ
The Sweet and Tangy BBQ chips are sweet and tangy, just like the bag says; and they definitely have that BBQ flavor. Among my group of taste testers, the Sweet and Tangy BBQ flavor was one of the favorites. They wouldn’t be my first choice, but I would still recommend them.
#4 Flamin’ Hot Limon
The Flamin’ Hot Limon are very similar to the Flamas, however the spice is a little less extreme and the lime isn’t as strong. They’re slightly sweet, and very addicting. They pack more than enough punch to satisfy any spice chip lover.
#3 Nacho Cheese
Doritos classic flavor; these chips will never get old. With the perfect amount of cheese, they are the chip staple, nothing extra special but something everyone can enjoy. My favorite use for Doritos Nacho Cheese: walking tacos.
#2 Cool Ranch
One of the most popular flavors, the Cool Ranch has the perfect amount of seasoning: Not too much, and not too little. They’re a safe bet: as of yet I haven’t met a single person who would disagree that the Cool Ranch flavor is one of the best. And you just can’t go wrong with zesty ranch, a bit of cheese, and all of the things that make Cool Ranch chips delicious.
#1 Spicy Sweet Chili
My personal favorite and by far the most popular pick, Doritos Spicy Sweet Chili is sweet, just like the bag says, with a taste of cheese, chili, soy, and a umami taste that is hard to pinpoint but is nothing short of amazing. The combination of these flavors is mouthwatering. They have just a bit of spice that is satisfying without being overwhelming. The flavor has grown in popularity, making them easy to find at gas stations, Walmart, and Nixa High School’s vending machines. If you haven’t tried them yet, then be sure to add them to your shopping list.
The verdict
I taste tested Doritos Dinamita Chile Limon, Flamin’ Hot Cool Ranch, Flamas, Sweet & Tangy BBQ, Flamin’ Hot Limon, Nacho Cheese, Cool Ranch, and Spicy Sweet Chili. My top two recommendations are definitely the Spicy Sweet Chili and Cool Ranch. Prices vary based on the size of the bag, but the Spicy Sweet Chili and Cool Ranch both sell at around 37.8 cents per ounce at Walmart. For someone looking for a chip with a kick to it, I would recommend the Flamin’ Hot Limon. They’re a bit more expensive than some of the other chips, but well worth the price.
